How to Make Your Scented Candle Last Longer: 7 Candle Care Tips

There's something deeply satisfying about lighting a scented candle at the end of a long day. But if you're investing in a beautiful candle, you want it to last — and burn beautifully — for as long as possible.

The good news? How you burn your candle matters just as much as the candle itself.

From the very first burn to keeping your wick trimmed, a few simple candle care tips can help your candle burn more evenly, release its fragrance better and extend its life.

Whether you're new to scented candles or already have a favourite sitting on your bedside table, here's how to get the most out of every burn.

1. Let Your Candle Burn Long Enough on the First Burn

The first burn is arguably the most important one.

When you light a new candle, allow the melted wax pool to reach close to the edges of the vessel before extinguishing it. This helps establish an even melt pool and reduces the chances of candle tunneling — where wax burns down the centre while a ring of wax remains around the sides.

For most candles, this can take a couple of hours depending on the size of the vessel.

The golden rule: Don't extinguish your candle too quickly during its first burn.

A well-established first burn helps create a more even burn throughout the candle's life.

2. Don't Burn Your Candle for Too Long

It may be tempting to leave your favourite candle burning throughout an entire evening, but longer isn't always better.

As a general rule, avoid burning a candle for more than 3–4 hours at a time. Extended burning can cause the vessel and wax to become excessively hot and may affect the way the candle burns.

Instead, allow the candle to cool completely before lighting it again.

This simple habit can help you enjoy your candle over more occasions — rather than using up a large amount of wax in a single sitting.

3. Keep Your Wick Trimmed

One of the easiest ways to improve your candle's performance is to take care of the wick.

Before each burn, check your wick and remove any excess charred material or buildup. Keeping the wick at an appropriate length helps maintain a controlled flame and can reduce excess soot or smoke.

With wooden wick candles, this is particularly important because the wick can accumulate carbonised material as it burns.

A clean, well-maintained wick = a cleaner, more consistent burn.

4. Don't Let Your Candle Tunnel

Ever noticed that your candle has burned down the middle while there's still a thick layer of wax around the sides?

That's candle tunneling.

It usually happens when a candle isn't allowed to burn long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the vessel — particularly during the early burns.

The best way to prevent tunneling is simple:

Give your candle enough time to develop a full, even melt pool before extinguishing it.

If tunneling has already started, allowing the candle to burn for a longer period during the next suitable burn can help the melt pool catch up.

5. Keep Your Candle Away From Drafts

Where you place your candle can make a surprising difference.

Avoid placing it directly under a fan, beside an open window or in a high-traffic area where air constantly moves around the flame.

A draft can make the flame flicker unevenly and cause one side of the wax to melt faster than the other.

For the most even burn, place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts.

And, of course, never leave a burning candle unattended.

6. Extinguish Your Candle Properly

How you put out your candle matters too.

Instead of blowing directly onto the flame, consider using a candle snuffer. It helps extinguish the flame without creating as much smoke and prevents hot wax from splashing.

If you don't have a snuffer, gently extinguishing the flame while keeping the wick centred is still preferable to repeatedly disturbing the wax.

Once extinguished, allow the candle to cool completely before moving it.

7. Give Your Candle a Second Life

At IVARO, we believe a candle shouldn't end when the wax does.

Our candles are housed in 100% natural marble vessels designed to be reused.

Once you've finished burning your candle, let the remaining wax cool and harden. Remove the residual wax, then wash the vessel gently with soap and water and allow it to dry completely.

Your marble vessel can then become part of your home in a completely new way.

Use it as a:

  • Jewellery holder
  • Cotton pad holder
  • Makeup brush holder
  • Mini planter
  • Desk organiser
  • Trinket holder

Because sometimes the best part of a candle is what stays behind.

Bonus Tip: Store Your Candle Properly

If you're not going to use your candle for a while, keep it somewhere cool, dry and away from direct sunlight.

Excessive heat or sunlight can affect the wax, fragrance and appearance of the candle.

Keeping the lid on, if your candle has one, can also help prevent dust from settling on the wax.

How Long Should a Scented Candle Last?

The burn time of a candle depends on several factors, including its size, wax type, wick and how frequently and how long you burn it.

A candle that's burned correctly will generally last longer than one that's repeatedly burned for very short periods or for excessively long periods.

That's why proper candle care isn't just about aesthetics — it helps you get more value and more enjoyment from your candle.

The IVARO Way of Burning a Candle

At IVARO, our candles bring together vegan soy wax, natural fragrances and wooden wicks, housed in handcrafted natural marble vessels.

But even a beautifully made candle needs a little care.

So the next time you light your IVARO candle, remember:

First burn → Let the wax melt evenly
Every burn → Keep an eye on the wick
Every time → Keep it away from drafts
After burning → Let it cool completely
When finished → Reuse the marble vessel

A little care goes a long way.

Because a candle isn't just something you light.

It's a ritual worth taking your time with.
